"ddclient -daemon=0 -debug -verbose -noquiet" This runs sucessfully. Its almost as if I need to set up a cron job to run the above command every so often to update dyndns, but I shouldnt have to.
DNS name servers which keep track of DNS records and exchange this information between each other to maintain consistency. a web browser) is then directed to one of these name servers. However, many home users are assigned an IP address that changes more frequently. This makes it a challenge to translate a Name to one of these IP addresses. These Dynamic DNS services allow the user to choose a hostname and set an initial IP address to correspond to that hostname. The ddclient wiki lists some configurations for several Dynamic DNS services. The following section has been adapted from Dynamic IP servers. If this is the first time you have installed ddclient, you will be prompted by the installation script for the hostname(s) that you registered with Dyn DNS (or other Dynamic DNS service). This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant.
They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.
Why isnt ddclient not updating or writing to my syslog. pid=/var/run/protocol=dyndns2 #use=if, if=eth0 use=web, web=checkip.dyndns.org, web-skip='IP Address' server=members.login=xxxx password=xxxx xxxx. Thanks in advance, Boydddclient only does an update when the IP address changes, unless you call for a forced update.
It only writes to the syslog when it starts, stops, does an IP update or attempts to do an update and the IP address has not changed. Would you really want something writing a syslog entry every 5 min. This makes sense, except the IP address of this box never changes, it has network address and I use port forwarding on my router to direct me to this box.
Thx again, Boydddclient couldnt care less what the box IP is.
Every 5 min, it compares the probe of the IP source to what is in /etc/ddclient/ddclient.cache (ddclient-3.6.6).
Otherwise there are ddns update tools that finger a remote server and ascertain your IP by what this yields.
